A pubic ingrown hair occurs when pubic hair goes back into the skin, causing inflammation. It may look like a bump or acne on the skin. People with curly hair are more susceptible to the condition. This is because coily hair is more likely to curve back and re-enter the skin. Pubic ingrown hairs are not uncommon. If you struggle with this issue, know you are not alone. Moreover, I am here to help! Over the years, I have developed a routine that reduces the amount of ingrowns on my skin. Here are the staples you should consider adding to your repertoire:
Benzoyl Peroxide 4%: A dermatologist recommended I wash my mons pubis with this. This is an external cleanser and should NOT be used internally. Unlike other soaps, it doesn’t leave oil or residue on my skin.
Waxing: I get waxes every 4-6 weeks. If you choose to get waxed, you must go to someone experienced. Do NOT wax your pubic area yourself. This could lead to damage and other issues. Additionally, ask your waxer questions about your skin. Ask: what can I do to reduce my ingrowns? Do you see any problems with my skin? How can I address that? The right waxer is a wealth of information about your skin. If you are in Fort Worth, I suggest booking with Nia at Peach Envy. She is the best waxer in Texas! She even has the reviews to prove it. Scrubs: You should exfoliate your bikini area 2-3 times weekly. Here’s how you should do that. Take a warm shower for at least 10 minutes. This will soften your skin. After this slip on an exfoliating mitt. Gently massage small circles on your mons pubis for one minute. Then massage small circles on your left outer lip for 1 minute. After this, do the same thing on your right outer lip. Be sure to keep moving your hand so you fully massage each section. For extra efficiency, you can use a scrub with the exfoliating mitt. I currently use the Fur Ingrown hair scrub. I love this scrub and highly recommend it to anyone who is ingrown-prone. If you are getting waxes, you shouldn’t use products containing AHAs for about a week before your waxing appointment. If I have less than a week before my wax, I use this scrub by Arabels Naturals. I love this small business and this scrub. A little goes a long way, so one bottle can last awhile.
Fur Ingrown Eliminator Serum: TBH, I sometimes slack on 1-4. I have weeks where I’m so busy I don’t use the scrub or don’t book a waxing appointment. During these times, my ingrown hairs come back. When this happens, I reach for this Fur serum. It eradicates my ingrown hair and soothes any irritation.
If you are struggling with pubic Ingrowns, know that you are not alone. What you are experiencing is not uncommon, and things can get better. I highly recommend reading Beauty Below by Cynthia M. Wesley. It is full of helpful tips that go beyond what was discussed here. It is available on Amazon.
